Most children start preschool between the ages of 3 and 4. However, some programs may accept children as young as 2.5 years old, depending on their readiness and developmental milestones.
Readiness for preschool can vary from child to child. Signs that your child may be ready include showing interest in socializing with peers, being able to follow simple instructions, and demonstrating basic self-care skills like washing hands or using the toilet. It’s also important for them to express curiosity about the world around them.
To help prepare your child for preschool, establish a routine that includes regular playdates to encourage social skills, read together to foster a love for books, and engage in simple activities that promote independence, like dressing themselves or helping with snacks.
Most preschools will provide a list of necessary items, but generally, your child should bring a change of clothes, a water bottle, a lunch or snack (if required), and any comfort items like a small blanket or stuffed animal. It’s also a good idea to label everything with your child’s name.
To help your child adjust, visit the preschool together before their first day, establish a consistent drop-off routine, and talk positively about what to expect. Encouraging open communication about their feelings and experiences can also help ease any anxiety they may have about starting preschool.
